Here is an update on neighbourhood policing in Syston, Thurmaston and surrounding

What have the neighbourhood team been doing?

- High Visibility/Reassurance Patrols – in our ‘hot spot’ areas

-   On 19/09, the local beat team attended a fantastic wellbeing event at Manor park Medical Practice. It was a great opportunity to meet and speak with members of our community, listen to any concerns or issues they wanted to raise, and remind everyone of the importance of looking after both physical and mental health. We were also pleased to meet the Lord Mayor of Leicester, who was in attendance supporting the event.

- On 18/09, we met with representatives from local schools, alongside our local MP and Parish Councillor, to discuss concerns around anti-social behaviour and its impact on children in the area. We discussed ways we can work together to reduce ASB around our schools and help make these areas safer and more welcoming for pupils, staff and the wider community. 

This is just a selection of what the neighbourhood team have been doing, we have also been completing crime investigations, partnership working with other agencies and engaging with residents and businesses in the area. 

 Our Priorities

There has been a slight increase in reports of theft from motor vehicles across the beat. Neighbourhood officers are actively working to identify offenders, develop intelligence, and reduce opportunities for crime through targeted patrols, crime prevention activity, and community engagement. Targeted high-visibility patrols are being conducted in areas identified as being most affected, particularly during periods when offences are more likely to occur. Officers are reviewing crime reports to identify patterns, repeat locations, and potential suspects, making use of CCTV, witness accounts, forensic opportunities, and intelligence submissions where available to support investigations. Engagement has taken place with residents to provide practical crime prevention advice, including ensuring vehicles are locked and secure, removing valuables from sight, avoiding leaving items on display, and checking that keys are stored safely away from entry points within the home. Officers. This are also encouraging residents to report any suspicious persons or vehicles seen in residential areas, car parks, or near parked vehicles activity will continue through intelligence-led patrols, proactive investigations, and ongoing community engagement to reduce offending and provide reassurance. Beat surgeries will continue across the area, giving residents the opportunity to raise concerns directly with officers and receive tailored crime prevention advice aimed at protecting their vehicles and property.

Officers have received concerns relating to road safety issues across the beat, including reports of speeding, careless driving, and other antisocial vehicle use. Neighbourhood officers are working proactively with Roads Policing colleagues and partner agencies to identify problem locations, address concerns raised by the community, and improve safety for all road users. Targeted patrols are being conducted at locations identified through community reports, intelligence, and collision data. Officers are carrying out speed enforcement activity, engaging with drivers where appropriate, and taking positive action against those whose manner of driving places others at risk. Patrols also provide reassurance to residents and help deter dangerous and inconsiderate driving behaviour. Engagement has taken place with local residents, schools, community groups and parish councils to better understand concerns and identify emerging issues. Officers continue to provide road safety advice and promote responsible driving standards, particularly around residential areas, schools, pedestrian crossing points and routes frequently used by cyclists. This activity will continue through intelligence-led patrols, speed enforcement operations, community engagement and partnership working to improve road safety, reduce offending, and provide reassurance to residents across the beat. Local Officer drop-ins will also continue, giving members of the public the opportunity to raise concerns directly with officers and discuss local priorities.

There has been a slight increase in reports of residential burglary across the beat. Neighbourhood officers are working proactively to identify offenders, develop intelligence, and provide reassurance to residents through targeted patrols and engagement activity. As we move into the autumn and winter months, with darker nights and reduced daylight hours, residents are encouraged to take simple steps to protect their homes. Officers are providing crime prevention and security advice, including ensuring doors and windows are secured, using external lighting where available, keeping valuables out of sight, and making properties appear occupied when unattended. High-visibility patrols are being conducted in areas affected by recent offences, particularly during periods identified through crime pattern analysis as presenting a higher risk. These patrols are designed to deter offenders, reassure the public, and identify suspicious behaviour at an early stage. Officers will continue to make use of intelligence submissions, CCTV opportunities, witness accounts, and partnership working to support investigations and identify those responsible. Neighbourhood officers are also engaging with residents, Neighbourhood Watch groups, local councils, and partner agencies to promote home security measures and encourage the prompt reporting of suspicious activity. Beat surgeries and community engagement events will continue across the area, providing opportunities for residents to discuss concerns directly with officers and receive tailored crime prevention advice. Anyone who witnesses suspicious activity, unfamiliar vehicles acting suspiciously in residential areas, or individuals attempting to gain access to properties is encouraged to report it to police at the earliest opportunity. Prompt reporting remains vital in helping officers prevent offences and bring offenders to justice.
